For parents seeking the best education in Montana, beginning in the toddler years and extending through kindergarten, Great Beginnings Montessori School is the area’s thought leader in preschool education. GBMS provides a personalized Montessori educational experience that intersects with the needs of the 21st century, preparing children for the global age. Great Beginnings Montessori is an independent, non-profit school nestled against the backdrop of the Bridger Range (just north of Bozeman and south of the Springhill community). Since 1986, our students have excelled in area schools and gone on to succeed at top colleges and universities across the country.

While conventional schools focus on curriculum, Montessori focuses on the child first. A Great Beginnings education combines the time-tested and visionary insights of Dr. Maria Montessori with the combination of outdoor exploration and leading-edge Montessori study. The results are confident, curious and academically- exceptional students prepared for an ever-evolving world. Great Beginnings students are innovators, creators, and leaders.

Our campus includes Montana’s first yurt classroom, two outdoor classrooms, a natural outdoor amphitheater, and a natural playground. We encourage children to explore using outdoor space for science enrichment that keep students’ minds and bodies active.

Lieutenant Governor Visit

Friday, September 18, 2015

The Lieutenant Governor of the State of Montana, Angela McLean, will visit Great Beginnings Friday, September 18th at 2:30pm.

The Lt. Gov. developed Montana SMART Schools, with the goal of reducing energy usage in schools and saving schools money. The Lt. Gov. is visiting GBMS to recognize GBMS for its commitment to a sustainable environment; including, the outdoor classrooms, the environmental education, the compost bins, the recycling, and the edible gardens - along with the new yurt. She would like for the students and faculty show her around, and then have time for meet and greet with parents as they are picking up their children.

Our education process at Great Beginnings Montessori is based on the understanding that learning is predicated upon the basic human urge to explore. Each child’s curiosity is nurtured from early childhood (beginning at age two) through our kindergarten yurt classroom.

Many of the skills identified as being essential for success in the new era of “21st Century Learning,” such as initiative, self-direction, creativity, innovation and social responsibility are embedded in Montessori philosophy and are the outcomes of a Great Beginnings Montessori education. Our educational commitment includes teaching environmental principles to children through a direct connection with nature, and inspiring respect for our natural world as aware, responsible and caring citizens.

A successful Montessori program requires three essential elements: a prepared environment, a prepared adult, and freedom with limits. The environment at Great Beginnings Montessori offers students a range of exploration, as our teachers guide them in real-world activities preparing them to succeed in the world we live in. As our kindergarten students develop socially and academically, we support their learning and curiosity with exploration that extends beyond the classroom and into the local community.
